The status quo of the Belgian alumni policies

Universities vs Universities of applied sciences
Universities in the Belgian Higher Education give more attention to alumni policy than universities of applied sciences. Most universities of applied sciences find themselves at the introduction phase of the alumni policy, the universities on the other hand want to extend their alumni policy. Universities consider the alumni policy more as a `business’, which has as result that the majority of the universities has an independent alumni department with alumni officers. Within the professional colleges, this is still limited.

The alumni departments within the universities work generally with a consequent automatic registration of the contact data of their alumni in their database. Only half of the universities of applied sciences have a automatic registration of the contact data of their alumni and keep their database up to date.

Another result that indicates that Belgian universities are further with their alumni policy, is the fact that universities have, on average, founded more alumni societies than universities of applied sciences.

Another big difference between universities of applied sciences and universities which came out of this research is that universities of applied sciences focus more on the topic lifelong learning and networking, the universities focus more on their brand awareness and job matching.

The Netherlands vs Flanders
But what are the specific differences between the alumni policy in the Netherlands and Belgium? In the Netherlands educational institutions are externally motivated by the NVAO, which ensures a feedback of the alumni to the curriculum. This way the curriculum remains up to date. In Flanders the external motivation by the NVAO takes place just since the year 2004-2005.

The Netherlands is within the framework of the alumni policy further than Flanders, but Flanders will experience the same increase as the Netherlands.

Flanders vs Walloon
And what are the specific differences between Walloon and Flanders? The demand for alumni software on the alumni market in Flanders is in general quiet high, especially among the universities of applied sciences. The Walloon market is on the other hand a very closed market, with a very difficult market penetration.
